Felted Giraffe Kirin by FamiliarOddlings Felted Giraffe Kirin by FamiliarOddlings
Kind of a continuing theme from the Giraffe Kirin painting [link] I made for my twin's birthday. This is also a gift to her, and a side project for me to relieve stress.

I've been told that the word kirin also means giraffe in Japanese so I wanted to explore a giraffe unicorn creature. The colors are my sister's favorites and I thought they added to the magical element. In my research, I read that kirin have perfectly circular hooves, not cloven like a deer's or shaped like a giraffe's, so that's what I tried to do. The horn is completely my fabrication. I don't know what kirin's horns are supposed to be like. Probably antler-like?

WIP: [link]

Needle-felted wool over pipe cleaner with paper clay eyes, hooves, and horn. 8 in. tall, 4.5 in. long, and 2 in. wide.

What kind of process do you use to make that?
Could you/have you done a tutorial?

Thank you! :D

I make it through the process of needle felting, i.e. poking strands of wool with a barbed needle until it knots/felts together into a kind of fabric. I've been meaning to make a tutorial but haven't managed to yet. I will try to do it soon!

This is so incredibly cooooool! I love its huge ears and fluffy mane.

I have just recently started felting, after many years of other fiber-related activities (I love it! I wish I had started sooner!), and I'm looking around at other deviants' felted things for inspiration. Your stuff is fantastic.

Oh yes, felting is so much fun! I felt that way too when I discovered it -- why haven't I been doing this my whole life?! What other kinds of fiber art did you do, if you don't mind my asking? Looking at the felting deviants around here is very inspiring, there are some amazing people here. Aw, thank you for saying that about mine! :)

I mostly spin - I LOVE SPINNING! I also knit (very inventively) and started crocehting a bit last spring but haven't really gotten into it. I do like making flowers, though. I got a book called "100 flowers to knit and crochet," and it is AWESOME.

The coolest things I have knit so far (in my opinion) are my squidhats. I've done three of them, and I think they're all in my gallery... Yup. I just checked. They are here, here , and here, respectively.

And you're welcome. Your Kirin is tres adorable!

Really cute! I really like to animal combines.
 ...is it lame of me to request to see a Peter S. Beagle interpretation of a Unicorn (this Giraffe reminded me of her)?

Haha, no, it's not lame. I've been thinking about that myself lately, actually. But I have to come up with some interesting way of going about it and my brain is being uncooperative right now.

Oh my gosh, when I saw this finished I think I actually squeaked out loud. It turned out perfect!! Gosh I want sooo badly to meet this creature and photograph it in some fun little homemade worlds. Everything about it is lovely. I adore the long delicate legs and the beautiful lengthy neck. The face is extremely cute, especially that little pink snout and beautiful, large, knowing eye. I really like the fuzzy mane you gave it as well.

Gosh I can hardly get over this critter I want to play with it so badly! Would you ever make more of these do you think?:blackrose:

:D I'm glad you like it, Aria! I didn't know if I should do the nose like that or not, haha.

Sure, I'd love to make more. It was fun. ^__^ I don't have anything specific I want to try out at the moment though. Do you have an idea? Like a new kind of horn or color or something?

I am SO glad you did the nose like that.

I think new horn colours (and even shapes) would rock as well of course as new body colours. I imagine if this was a living species they would have different colours and patterns like horses and such. And if you begin making more I very well may definitely need to buy one...if possible... Maybe you could rough sketch some ideas for different colours or patterns. Like a swirly one or one that is light blue with big yellow stars for spots on it (I think of such babyish designs...):blackrose:

Like with the octopus, I think light and dark blue mixed would be a nice choice in colors. Maybe light and dark green together, too. Or purple. It'd be up to you, of course, but I think that would look pretty interesting. :aww:
