Uncolored Cuttlefish by FamiliarOddlings Uncolored Cuttlefish by FamiliarOddlings
An improved cuttlefish! Compare to my first attempt, the original: [link]

This time I used pipe-cleaner for the arms so it can be posed properly but I somehow managed to keep it basically the same size, about five inches long. Also my technique for coloring the eyes is so much better -- blended pastels, a marker for the pupil, and a bit of white acrylic to outline it.

This guy is left uncolored for the moment because I want to offer customized color for each commission. ^_^ I'm going to post this on my etsy [link] once I've got a few samples done.

Commissions are going to be $50 USD (not including shipping) for these guys.

This is quite possibly the most adorable thing I've ever seen. ;__;

How do you make these?

:D Thank you!!

To make these, I use needle felted wool over an armature make out of pipe cleaners. The wool starts out as loose fibers and then I take a special barbed needle and poke the wool, which "felts" the fibers together, tangling them and making them firm into a shape. The eyes are made from paper clay (a super fine papier mache substance I buy from craft stores) which I paint.

Does that explain it for you? I hope it helps!

Alll your cuttlefish are beyond adorable! I love the fins around its body.
I actually really like the (lack of) colour. To me it looks like it's hiding in white sand or cotton candy <3

I love this! <3 Ahh, it's so neat that you can move the arms and everything. But a detail I especially love is what the eyes look like. These animals have such funny pupils, and you made them look very alive here too. You also did the backside of the cuttlefish great, everything looks very close to reality. It's very cute. :D

Oh, wonderful comment!!! Thank you, Gloomy! (I feel like I can call you that since I've seen you around and looked at your gallery numerous times but I don't know if I've actually ever commented... *shame* Feel free to tell me to knock it off.) The eyes are one of my absolute favorite things about cuttlefish! They're so strange but beautiful! I'm so thrilled you think I've managed to make them look "alive" here! Thank you! :D

Oh my gosh the shot of him holding the pencil is so <3 <3 <3 This little guy is gorgeous and super well made. Such wonderful attention to detail. I love his underside and the fact that you made all his arms poseable too. I just want to pinch him between my fingers so badly! He looks terribly cuddly. I love the idea of them being custom colours too! Why...we could even have a beautiful blue one or a ridiculous orange one.:blackrose:

:D Thank you, Aria! The pencil shots are perfect for showing both the sizes and the posability. I only wish I could add little suckers to the arms, but it's just too small. Heehee! I think he'd like a pinch from you! :heart: Yes, I want to make a bunch of crazy colored ones! The possibilities are practically endless.

I think that it looks good uncolored. They do change colors, so you can just say it's been hiding in white sand. :)

It looks like the real thing, extremely well done!
